About this Role*

The purpose of the Product Selection Lead role is to implement successful selection, placement and delivery of new seeds products and supporting technical product information to the Syngenta Commercial Team. The Product Selection Lead works within a multi-function Breeding Teams to deliver products defined by market specific Target Product Profiles (TPPs).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities*

  1. Implement the Product Selection process for target market(s) as a member of the Product Selection Team, including: a) Coordinate late stage trialing protocol (trial entry selection, seed makeup, testing locations, etc.) b) Coordinate field and lab phenotypic note collection on product selection trials c) Input, analyze, and summarize high quality data for promotion decisions d) Recommend and promote varieties/hybrids across late stages in support of the Variety/Hybrid Promotion Committee (VPC / HPC) process

  2. Drive Seeds Product Development engagement with the commercial business: a) Provide expertise, information and product descriptions to support new product launches and ensure proper product placement b) As a member of a cross functional team, engage in and / or organize meetings and field days with key customers to represent Syngenta products and Seeds Product Development

  3. Support delivery of competitive germplasm across the stage plan by working closely with Breeding Project Leads (BPL) to: a) Promote varieties/hybrids from early to advanced stage testing aligned with TPPs b) Review product and technology needs to provide direction on early pipeline support c) Provide performance data and information from late stage through commercial to improve new breeding starts

  4. Determine fit-for-purpose trialing geographies and locations that are aligned to target markets: a) Determine placement of advanced stage trials internally and externally (if applicable) b) Provide feedback to Trialing Managers that allows for continuous improvement in phenotyping, plot quality and testing efficiency

  5. Help to establish and refine TPPs as appropriate with key Commercial and Technical experts.

  6. Own the creation and distribution of Variety / Hybrid Product Profiles to Commercial.

  7. (As appropriate for the region and crop) Support Line Purity (LP) and Line Maintenance (LM) to ensure late stage products meet the LP / LM Code of Practice.

  8. (As appropriate for region and crop) Support Trait Introgression and Delivery aligned with business needs across late stages; identify and prioritize materials to be converted.

  9. (As appropriate for the region) May provide governance of promotion of new candidates into official registration trials; monitor and update performance of candidates through official trialing and registration ensuring products remain aligned with business objectives; visit and evaluate official trials as appropriate.

Accountabilities for PSL Team Lead

  1. Management of the Cereals NA PSL team: a) Provide Personal management and development for PSL region leads b) Take part in the NA PSLT c) Manage PSL budgets

  2. Lead the management of NA Cereals VPC/HPC meeting a) Processes for Variety selection/promotion in meetings b) Reporting of outcomes from VPC/HPC’s to Portfolio management and processes needed for commercialization

  3. Member of the NA Cereals management team: a) Review product and technology needs to provide direction on pipeline support including agronomy technical needs b) Provide technical plans and ideas for commercialization for Hybrids

Critical knowledge • Ph.D. or M.S. (or B.S. with equivalent years of experience) in one of the agricultural sciences such as plant breeding/genetics, agronomy, entomology, or plant pathology with training and experience in applied sciences preferred • Knowledge of product development and marketing with thorough knowledge of germplasm, trait value, data analysis, variety / hybrid positioning within the key markets • Knowledge of agronomic and crop management practices • Good understanding of experimental design

Critical experience • Demonstrated experience in a similar role utilizing similar skill sets • Additional skill sets in disciplines including environmental modeling, crop modeling, GIS applications, and/or programming languages is desirable • May require good working knowledge of official registration system(s), or experience working with national registration authorities • Experience in practical field trialing Project Management experience preferred
